Facebook et al. are *state apparatuses*. They grant backdoor access to user data to the NSA; they have contracts with and are virtually extensions of the intelligence industry; in the case of Facebook, startup capital came vis-a-vis In-Q-Tel, the CIA's own private-sector venture capital investment firm, to fund promising start-ups that might create technologies useful for intelligence agencies.
